We built our SPAM Filter with some key benefits in mind:
- Verify the recipient exists before accepting the mail
- This reduces the amount of mail delivery failures generated from spammers sending thousands of mail with a forged mail from and a random to address
- Verify the sender is valid before accepting the mail
- Our server attempts to verify the sender by looking up the server for the sender and checking the email address is valid on their machine
- This ensures the sender is really valid, which cuts out thousands of mails which have a completely forged 'from' address
- Scan the mail for any known virus infections
- We use Clam AV to scan our mails once they have been accepted for delivery. If a known virus is detected it is deleted
- Scan the mail against a set of rules (updated daily) to gauge it's score
- A score determines whether we judge the mail to be SPAM or not. The higher the score the higher the chance it is SPAM
- Rules are provided through SpamAssassin and are updated on a daily basis to ensure the SPAM Filter is kept up to date
